Dear Pupuke parents
Some reminder notes about monthly fees:
- Fees are due on the 1st of the month (prior to the month being paid for). The invoices are put into your pocket two weeks before the 1st of the month. Please let us know if you have not received one.
If you consistently pay late you will incur a 10% penalty.
- PLEASE pay the amount owing at the bottom of the invoice. It does vary from month to month because of billing periods, extra days, late fees etc and it is very difficult to keep track of payments accurately if you pay 'what you think you owe'. We DON'T accept part payments.
- Also a reminder about late pickup charges. $6.00 per hour (or part hour) for any time outside enrolled hours. E.g. Before 9am and after 3pm. $2.00 per minute after 5.30pm.
- DON'T pay by cash or cheque please. We would like parents to pay by EFTPOS OR INTERNET PAYMENTS. Our account number is at the bottom of your invoice.
Finally a big thank you to the parents who ALWAYS pay on time and the right amount! Thank you so much it makes our lives so much easier.

Tui Room request
If you have any old kitchenware (pots, pans, bowls, utensils etc) or shoes (especially with heels), scarves or anything for the children to dressup in, we would love to have them! The children are right into creative and imaginative play at the moment and we would love to add to our collection!!
Many thanks

Dear Parents/Caregivers
Recently I have had lots of parents asking me how they can assist their child at home with early literacy. I have therefore decided to write you this letter so that I can provide you with some background information and some general guidelines on how you can help your child at home, if they are displaying an interest in, for example, writing their own name.
Before children learn to write their wrist muscles need to be strong and toned. Spreading vegemite on crackers, cutting play dough with a knife, securing stickle bricks or connect straws, opening and closing clothesline pegs, and other manipulative type things like these help develop wrist muscles; as does swinging on a swing or across the monkey bars.
Before children learn to write they also need to be able to hold a pen or pencil correctly – we encourage them to use what is called a "tripod grip". Drawing and painting help them develop this grip because they soon figure out that they have more control over the tool there are using if they hold it the way we encourage them to.
Before children learn to write children need to know what letters of the alphabet look like. Their name cards that they put on their lockers each day teaches the children what the first letter of their name looks like (it's always a capital letter) and what the rest of their name looks like (the rest of the letters are, and should only ever be, written in lowercase).
Before children learn to write they need to develop a steady hand. Different activities that we do during "Mat-times" and "Transition Group time" provide them with plenty of opportunities to practice letter formation. They practice flow and curve, where to begin and where to end.
Attached is a copy of what we (and primary schools) use when teaching children how to write Uppercase and Lowercase letters of the alphabet correctly, and numerals from 0 – 9. If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to come and see me.
Kind Regards
Melanie Te Paa (Head Teacher of Pukeko Room).

Dear Parents/Caregivers
Due to the children's current interest in Māori culture, we have organised a day trip to Auckland Museum on Wednesday 24th of February. The children will be going to a Māori cultural show at 11.00am, where they will see Māori people in action doing the haka, using poi, playing traditional Māori games and singing a variety of waiata (songs). All of these things the children are learning how to do at present, in the hope that one day in the near future they will be able to show you at another of our parent's evenings.
We will be travelling to and from the Museum by bus, and the teacher/child ratio will be 1:4 (that is, one teacher per four children). Whilst we are at the Museum, we would also like to follow up on another interest of the children's...bugs and insects. Therefore we have arranged to visit "Weird and Wonderful" as well. The cost of the trip is $25.00 per child. This pays for our transport and entrance fees to both the Cultural Show and Weird and Wonderful.
Please make sure that your child arrives no later than 9.00am on the morning of our trip because prior to our departure at 9.30am sharp, there are lots of things we need to do first. For example, the children will be given morning tea before we leave, they will need to get into their assigned groups, put their name badges on, go to the toilet, and so on. We will be packing a lunch to take with us. If your child is late or cannot attend the trip for whatever reason, they will need to spend the day in the Tui Room.
The following is how we are planning to schedule our day.
Children arrive at Pupuke - no later than 9.00am
Depart Pupuke for Museum - 9.30am sharp
Arrive at Museum 10.00am
Explore the Māori exhibition - 10.00am – 10.45am
Attend Māori cultural show - 11.00am – 11.45am
Have lunch on the domain 11.45am – 12.15pm
Go to Weird and Wonderful - 12.30pm – 1.30pm
Depart Museum 2.00pm
Arrive back at Pupuke - 2.30pm
If you are happy for your child to attend this trip, could you please sign and return the permission slip below and include full payment in CASH ONLY by Wednesday 10th February, IF you haven't already contributed to our "Special Fund Account" in which case this money will be deducted from it accordingly.
Kind Regards
