Letter to parents re: Maori Cultural Evening

Dear Parents and Caregivers


As you know the children in the Pukeko Room have been learning about Te Reo and Tikanga Māori ever since they arrived back from their summer break. It has been an amazing journey for us all because we have learnt so much. In fact we all believe that this will be an ongoing interest of the children’s because they all love doing the haka and dressing up in traditional Māori costume.


However, other interests of the children’s are now beginning to emerge, so we feel that it is time to move on to something else. Before we do so though, we would like to conclude by inviting you to a Māori cultural evening on Monday 22nd of March from 5.30pm – 7pm.


We will begin with a semi traditional pōwhiri (welcome). The children will then put on a show for you so that they can demonstrate to you some of what they have learnt. And then we will conclude by having a traditional Māori hākari (feast) which we will have delivered from “The Hangi Shop”.


The cost of the hangi is $12.00 per adult and $8.00 per child. Everyone will receive a piece of chicken, kumara, potato, pumpkin and cabbage, and then you have the choice of either lamb or pork. There is a vegetarian option. We will supply tea, coffee, water and juice but if you would like to bring something else to drink you are more than welcome to.


Please return the form below stating how many adults and children will be attending from your whanau (family), including full payment (CASH ONLY please) by Tuesday 16th March, so that we know how many to expect on the night and therefore how many people to order food for. We look forward to seeing as many of you here as possible because the children are so excited about putting on yet another show for you all.
